I am increasingly getting asked about quick tips to increase sales, so I thought I would post the A to Z of simple sales tips that I know work – because many successful businesses I know and have worked with use continuously use these.

A – Ask your customers if they would buy your product/service

If you have a new business idea or are looking to expand into a new market, it is very easy to fall into the trap of believing you have come up with the best thing since sliced bread.

Don’t get me wrong, you may have just come up with something that will revolutionise your customer’s business, but don’t be too precious about it.

Try out your own market research. What you should do is ask the very people who you believe will benefit from your new initiative if they would buy it. Pick up the phone or drop in and see either one of your existing customers, or someone you would like to become a customer.

Start your conversation by saying “I wonder if you could help me? I’m conducting some market research – I’ve got this new idea that I think would be ideal for you/your business, and I just wanted to run it by you to see if it really would be of interest to you…”

The feedback you will get will be invaluable – hopefully it will confirm to you that you are onto a winner. Alternatively, it could save you a fortune in time and effort developing something that is a dead-duck. Of course, don’t just take the opinion of one customer, but look for a trend.

Whatever the feed-back you get, make sure you don’t ignore it or try to make excuses for it. After all, this is your customers speaking and it is them who will be potentially buying from you!
